Phonics

At Brinsworth Howarth Primary School we are passionate about helping children to develop the crucial skills of reading and writing that will enable them access to learning and success in the wider world. Alongside teaching the skills of reading and spelling, we aim to nurture an enthusiasm for reading and the pleasure in finding new knowledge or escaping into an imaginary world where anything is possible.

The teaching of reading and spelling is based on the Sounds-Write programme. Children in F2 are taught the letter sound correspondences alongside daily practice of the skills of blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation. Children continue on their phonics journey through key Stage 1 or until they are competent in reading and spelling.

Children in F1 develop their phonological awareness skills, are introduced to blending and segmenting and learn how to be ready for learning in preparation for the Sounds-Write programme to begin in F2.
